“A SEASON ON THE EDGE”: This is a book written by John Skinner. No relation to our show but as a fan of fishing books I couldn’t resist reading. If you liked our “Montauk Style” episode then you’ll enjoy this book. It gives you an insight into a year in the life of a Striped Bass fanatic. The Surf Caster/Striped Bass fisherman is a different breed of cat. They are passionate, committed, fanatical and obsessed with the pursuit of Stripers in the surf. Everything else in life is put on hold when the Stripers are running. The only comparable group of fisherman I know of has been the Steelheaders.

The book follows the Striped Bass fishery on Long Island from season to season. The fishery in the Spring time has a different feel and flavor than it does in the Fall. John paints a great picture of each season and the interesting stories that come out of them. He is a good writer and this makes for enjoyable, intriguing stories. He is also able to teach hard learned Striper secrets and fishing tips without lecturing, but instead weaving the “how to’s” into his stories. This to me makes for a good teacher. You learn something while being entertained. This book is a fun one and informative. If you are a Striped Bass fisherman you will relate and if you don’t fish for Stripers it may turn you into one. Either way it’s good reading.
